Communicating with Your Dog
Many dog owners say that their dog understands everything they say. Of
course, they are exaggerating, for although most well-loved dogs with
sensible owners will pick up quite a vocabulary, it is one of sounds,
not words.
Saying 'sit' every time you notice your puppy about to sit down you
could start him off on the right road by word association. You could as
easily have the same result if you said 'stand' every time the puppy sat
down, for he does not understand the actual meaning of the word, but in
his 'action and result' mind can learn to associate the sound of a word
with an action.
